GENRES

The genre I would like to do is Alternative/Pop Punk/Indie pop however, I would like to also look at other genres such as Pop to broaden my understanding in music videos and their style. There are various different music genres such as:

  • Pop

  • Reggae

  • Hip Hop

  • Country

  • Rock

and many more. The listed ones are one of the more popular genres however, there are a lot more genres than the named above with a lot of mixed genres.

POP - Famous artists from the Pop genre:Miley Cyrus, Ariane Grande,Lady Gaga.

 One of the most poupular genres. Pop is an abbrievation of 'Popular.' Pop songs are normally different genres ( like dance and electro), however, they are normally made to be 'succesful' and 'popular.'

The pop genre music videos are very broad in terms of narrative. Since the popularity of these artists are on the higher end, their music videos will generate a variety of audiences. These music videos are more relaxed in terms on narrative as they need to suit a variety of people. The normal narratives of these pop genre artists are love/breakup, social/party themed or even the idea of trying to find out who they are. These are more relatable songs, therefore its huge popularity. Some may choose to take advantage of this popularity and try to portray more taboo subjects. Artists like Lady Gaga and Beyonce have used their popularity to spread awareness. 

 

Conclusion - Pop genre is a mix of everything and anyone with a regular hit with a huge audience may be considered a 'pop' artist. Their music videos can be of anything and everything but many have similar narratives.

Alternative - Famous artists from the Alternative genre: Radiohead, Nirvana, Green day.

Part of the rock genre but started of from an independent music underground in the 80s

Alternative genre pretty much means an 'alternative' side to a genre( mainly rock.) Alternative genres can be considered quite band/performance heavy and perhaps many with a rebellious theme. The genre and the music video goes together, so if the song is on the heavier rock side, the music video might portray conventions of the rock genre such as excessive movements and rebellious actions shown throughout the video. 

The rap genre is known to have provocative women, drugs/alcohol and money in their music video however, quite many also do address very taboo subjects as well.

Hip Hop - Famous artists from the Hip-Hop genre: Jay-Z, Drake, Kanye West.

Also known as 'rap music.'

Many pop-punk msuic videos have elements from both pop and rock videos. They also have alternative elements in their music videos too.

Pop Punk - Famous artists from the Pop Punk genre: Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, Paramore.

A mixture of pop and  punk rock music. Same as the 'pop' genre, music from the bands are normally very popular espeically with the target audience of the 'pop' genre.

 

Indie Pop - Famous artists from the Indie Pop genre: Fun, Lana Del Rey, Halsey.

Another genre of rock music which was also made by independent artists.

There are more, niche genres out there, but for my music video, I will be choosing the more popular genre because I like listening to the genre I will be choosing which will make it more easier for me to create the music video for. Many 'pop' videos have a huge budget, therefore able to create whatever they desire, whereas the less popular such as indie pop, will not have as big of a budget therefore having music videos like films will be less achieveable. Less known genres' music video are also more experimental, and also unique as the genres were made through experiments. No matter what genre the music video will be, what ever the content of the music video cannot be placed onto one type of genre. Music videos are a way to show their stories, as well as their songs. Music videos are more creative and can be used creatively and I will definitely not let the genre determine what the narrative of the music video will be.
